Rapid Prototype Vacuum casting

Vacuum casting is a rapid prototyping technique that allows the reproduction of dozens of plastic parts (with recesses present) from a master model. The parts obtained are suitable for assembly tests. The process uses the vacuum effect to inject the material into a silicone mold (hence the alternative names "silicone molding" and "vacuum casting"). The material injected is polyurethane, whose Shore (hardness) can be adjusted. Thus, unlike other techniques, it allows the creation of flexible parts.
Vacuum casting requires a master model that is manufactured by 3D milling or SLA printing. The mold then allows for perfect duplication.

The parts obtained by vacuum casting are visually and mechanically very similar to series injection molded parts. This technique is suitable both for rapid prototyping and for the production of small quantities of plastic parts (less than 100 parts). The reproducibility and speed of this process are really advantageous, as it takes only 5 to 7 days to produce 30 to 50 functional prototypes. For a dozen parts, vacuum casting generally makes more sense than 3D printing and CNC machining.


The parts obtained by vacuum casting are suitable for functional and visual tests. In fact, the physical, mechanical, thermal and aesthetic qualities of the manufactured parts are very similar to those of series injection molded parts. This is due to the wide range of possibilities offered by the large number of available resins. We use in particular the Axson and Heicast series. For example, the materials can be transparent, can mimic fiber reinforced, can be of different hardnesses or reproduce the properties of ABS, PMMA, PC, PE, PP, etc. Finally, our shop can apply different surface treatments such as glossy finishes or soft touch and can simulate a wide range of applications such as overmolding of inserts.
